The Shopfront is the outcome of recent and ongoing partnerships between families of the local community, Illoura ECIS Inc, Knox City Council, Knox Community Volunteers and the Ferntree Gully and Rowville Community Bank® branches of the Bendigo Bank and offers Information and support for Families concerned about their children, especially those with Additional Needs.
Families with concerns about their children often don’t know where to turn. Parents and Carers often seek help from family, friends, neighbours and professionals. But at some stage they look for support from others in similar situations. Many families access early intervention and find supportive friendships there. Families may find that it can take many years to reach a diagnosis or none may eventuate. Once their children are in school, some families find they are more on their own.
The Shopfront provides an opportunity to access current, relevant information and to meet informally with others in similar situations for mutual support to develop support networks, involvement in the local community and to have increased opportunities for education and training.
The Shopfront looks to provide information and support in a local hub, offering a drop-in resource centre; providing access to a range of services and resources for parents and carers of children pre-school to adolescents, multimedia resources for family members, Parent Support and Sibling networks, information forums, and volunteers in the community; who provide a vital role in this initiative.
